Construction: A lateral or universal joint is a metal expansion joint which allows movement laterally about the centre line and, if no pressure thrust restraints are included, axially. It can be any diameter and fitted with a range of end fittings.
Selection Criteria: A universal joint is typically used perpendicular to a long run of pipe which has a large axial movement – the lateral can absorb large movements much more easily than multiple in-line axial joints.
Main applications: Lines with high thermal growth where large movements result.
